Same House: Bad Rain

Every year, around August and September, people on the island have more worries. This is the time when Phu Quoc experiences the longest and influenced rainy season of the year. Although they have spent their whole life with nature, in recent years, witnessing the change of the pearl island under the erratic rain, the locals still cannot get used to it.

On the hottest days on the mainland, the weather in Phu Quoc is still very mild, because of the ocena. But once the rainy season start to strike, everything is different. In the peak period, the rain can last a few days, heavy and pouring, with the gray sky, the island appears sad and lonely. There was a time when a thunderstorm came along with a strong wind, and a few houses on the island were clearly shaking. Everyone was in a hurry to fasten the clothesline and adjust the corrugated roof. Climate change caused by environmental pollution makes the weather worse. The uncles lives here said "In the past, it was nothing, but these days the weather is erratic, it keeps raining, and pouring day by day, if we don't prepare to face it, our house will be en danger". Not only taking care of the house, the fishermen also take care of their boats. If it's broken, if it's drifted away, what will we have to do the living? Their faces were smeared with water, I don’t know if it was rain or sweat of worries.

The hidden corners of the island under the rain, perhaps only living here you can feel it all. Contrary to the radiant image of Phu Quoc with warm sunshine, it’s a sad and lonely tourist city in the rainy season. Almost no one comes here in this wet weather. With two seasons in a year, the time for the locals to do business is only half. But now the rainy season seems to be longer and heavier than before. In this situation, the short-term tourists agency will find it very truggling to survive and unable to move forward or backward.

Rain is part of nature as a way to wash away dirt. It is often said that "after the rain, the sun will shine again". Although the bad rainy season in Phu Quoc brings many challenges, it does not mean that there are no opportunities for us to change. Instead of after the rain there are mountains of plastic garbage, plastic bags stuck on the manhole, now can be a clean road with fresh air. Instead of anxiety after the rain, now is the eagerness to reopen tourism to welcome visitors. Care more about the environmental and pay attention to protect the nature so that the rainy season is less heavy for the small island.
