Same House: Ozone Layer

When we talk about the wonderful healing power of nature, it’s not just about the way the waves wash away our heaviness, but also the way nature heals itself. Today, the story Sava shares is full of positivity about the ozone layer, the "armor" that protects us every day.

The ozone layer sits in the stratosphere between 15 km and 30 km above the earth and shields us and other living things from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation, also known as UV rays. Even when using a thick layer of sunscreen and several layers of fabric outside, it is still not enough to withstand the harsh sunlight. With the ozone layer protecting us above, our skin can rest assured that it will be shielded from harmful radiation linked to skin cancer and cataracts.

There are many people who do not know about the ozone layer, or its wonderful role in life on Earth. But Sava is sure that everyone has heard the word "ozone hole", right? Simply put, the ozone hole has developed because people have polluted the atmosphere with chemicals like CFCs or HCFCs. In particular, CFCs were previously used for a wide range of applications, including refrigeration, air conditioning, foam packaging. Because these chemicals are so inert, they are able to stay in the atmosphere long enough to be carried upwards to the stratosphere where they can damage the ozone layer. Ozone layer depletion could have serious effects on human health and the environment.

But this is a positive post, so what follows is all good news. The ozone layer has been gradually recovering. Earth’s protective ozone layer is slowly but noticeably healing at a pace that would fully mend the hole over Antarctica in about 43 years (according to https://www.pbs.org/newshour/science/the-ozone-layer-is-slowly-but-surely-healing-the-un-says#:~:text=DENVER%20(AP)%20%E2%80%94%20Earth's%20protective,new%20United%20Nations%20report%20says). Nature has amazing healing power, and combined with human help, the ozone layer can really gradually get better. Each of us can also contribute to this by changing the refrigeration equipment (refrigerators, air conditioners, etc.) in our homes to new product line that don't use R-22 gas (a refrigerant compound of the HCFC group), which is both good for the environment and consumes less electricity.

Living on the island, people are used to exposing their skin to the sun and wind, no one cares about UV rays damaging their skin. Nature is laid out before us so that we can freely enjoy and slowly explore. Let's keep its beauty together!
